HP 17z Laptop Overview
One of the leading manufacturers of notebook computers is HP. These notebooks include the HP 17z.
HP packed this notebook full of practical features without raising the cost of the device. To be precise, the HP 17z had a $499 starting price at the time I wrote this review in February 2022.
Will the HP 17z, though, trade off performance for a lower price? In the sections that follow, let’s find out.
HP 17z Laptop Design
One of the few inexpensive notebooks that looks its price is the Hp 17z. This is as a result of its alluring appearance.Despite its attractive design, the HP 17z is made of plastic just like its predecessor. As a result, this laptop is brittle because it is made of plastic. The HP 17z is also offered in three stunning colors: black, silver, and blue. This HP 17z review is based specifically on the silver color option. Although this laptop looks good in all three colors, I believe the silver color to be the most fashionable.
The “hp” logo can be found in the middle of the HP 17z’s lid, continuing with the design of the device. The “hp” logo appeared to be divided into sections of silver and black.
Compared to other color options, silver tends to make this logo more obvious. When you run your palm through the laptop lid, it has a rough texture that is both physically appealing and satisfying. The display is supported by two sizable chrome hinges when the laptop’s lid is opened. These hinges are quite rigid and securely hold the lid thanks to HP.
Although there is a slight wobble when adjusting the lid, this is unimportant.
You will be impressed by this laptop’s 17.3-inch White LED-backlit display when it comes to the display. The display has a resolution of HD+ (1600 x 900 pixels). For a quick explanation, an HD+ resolution display’s quality lies somewhere between HD and Full HD resolutions. Consequently, an HD+ display is superior to an HD display in terms of quality.
But it falls short of an FHD display in terms of quality. The HP 17z display also has an SVA panel with a coating to reduce glare. The SVA panel improves the viewing angle of the display, and the anti-glare coating lessens reflections on the screen.
Additionally, you can choose between touchscreen and non-touchscreen versions of this laptop based on your preferences. They are quite thin for the screen bezels. The top bezel, however, is substantial enough to accommodate an HD webcam and an integrated digital microphone.
The HP 17z laptop’s keyboard has shallow key travel and minimal feedback when you type. When typing, the keys make a lot of noise, which may not be to everyone’s taste. The dedicated touchpad is located toward the bottom of the keyboard, downward.
Multi-touch gestures with up to four fingers; supported on its touchpad. There are enough ports on this laptop to meet your connectivity needs. The HP 17z measures 414.7 x 272.2 x 24.3 mm and weighs 2553.7 g. (W x D x H). In comparison to the HP ENVY 17, a 17-inch laptop, this one is lighter.
HP 17z Laptop Processor (CPU) Performance
The AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor in this laptop is strong. The minimum frequency of this processor, which has 4 cores, is 2.10 GHz. In addition, the processor has a 4 MB cache and a maximum frequency of 3.70 GHz. This laptop’s processor can easily handle multiple tasks at once thanks to its four cores.
The single-core test, which utilizes just one processor core, is the first stage of the test. The multi-core test, which utilizes all of the processor cores, is the second portion of the test.
Remember that a higher score indicates that the laptop did better on these tests.
Thus, the HP 17z achieved a single-core test score of 142, which is the exact benchmark average. On the other hand, it outperformed the average by scoring 652 points on the multi-core exam, which was 642 points.
In contrast, the HP 470 G7 8VU24EA achieved a higher result on the single-core test, earning 164 points. It received 520 points on the multi-core test, which was less successful.
The ASUS VivoBook 17 M712 performed similarly, but it received 131 fewer points on the single-core test. Additionally, it received 622 fewer points on the multi-core test.
The HP17z processor has demonstrated to perform reasonably well based on the aforementioned results. Therefore, in this section of the processor review, I will be giving this laptop a score of 9.
HP 17z Laptop Memory (RAM) Performance
This laptop has a DDR4 SDRAM with a 2400MHz operating speed. It has a maximum memory capacity of 16 GB and a standard memory capacity of 12 GB. DDR4 memory outperforms other memory types in terms of speed and bandwidth. So, after reading that brief explanation, you should have a good idea of how quickly this laptop can access memory.
Knowing that the HP 17z has two memory slots with removably RAM may please you. So it is possible to increase the memory up to 16 GB. This laptop can handle heavy multitasking with 12 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of RAM makes things even better. The HP 17z laptop should be able to run 25 Chrome browser tabs at once thanks to its 12 GB of RAM.
Three of these browser tabs can be used to stream YouTube videos without experiencing lag.
I’ll be sharing the PC Mark 10 test result with you so you can better understand how well the RAM performs. A benchmark called PC Mark 10 evaluates a computer’s memory efficiency using practical applications.
It’s also important to note that the laptop with the highest score in this benchmark test outperformed the others. As a result, the HP 17z received a score of 3841 in the benchmark test. Unfortunately, this performance fell short of the benchmark score’s average of 4377 points.
With 4494 points, the HP 470 G7 took the top spot in comparison. The ASUS VivoBook 17 M712, which had a score of 3719 points, was outperformed by the HP 17z.
The test result clearly demonstrates that, despite not having the best performance, the HP 17z outperformed some of its rivals. In this memory review section, I will therefore give it an eight out of ten.
HP 17z Laptop Storage
There are three storage options available for the HP17z. First off, it has a PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD storage with a 256 GB maximum capacity. The second storage option it offers combines a 1 TB SATA HDD with a 128 GB SSD. This storage option’s HDD has a 5400 RPM drive speed.
Last but not least, the HP17z provides a storage option that combines a 256 GB SDD and a 1 TB SATA HDD with a speed of 5400 RPM. The HDD and the SSD are two separate storage devices that are available for the second and third storage options on the same laptop.
You get a lot of storage from the HDD and quick storage from the SSD with these HDD+SSD storage options. In other words, you can have your cake and eat it too with this laptop since you are not limited to a single storage drive.
However, the first storage option—a 256 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD—is what this HP 17z review is based on. Sadly, I can only boast of speed with this option rather than a large storage capacity like I can with the second and third storage options.
My review model has 256 GB of storage space, so it might fill up quickly. For additional storage, this laptop thankfully also includes an external SD card reader.
Thus, if the laptop storage space runs out, one can store additional files on the SD card.
I will be sharing this laptop’s CrystalDiskMark benchmark result to attest to its performance. A storage drive’s sequential read and write speeds are measured by Crystaldiskmark.
To be clear, a storage drive’s sequential read speed is the time it takes to open a file. Write speed, meanwhile, refers to how quickly a file is saved to a computer’s storage.
Additionally, this laptop performs better the faster its read and write speeds are.
The HP 17z’s read speed in the CrystalDiskMark benchmark was 500.1 MBps. The laptop, on the other hand, had a write speed of 325 MBps.
The read and write speeds of the Lenovo ThinkPad E470 were 458.7 MBps and 476.5 MBps, respectively. The HP 17z should open files more quickly than the Lenovo Thinkpad E470, according to this.
The HP 17z will take longer to save files than the Lenovo Thinkpad E470.
In conclusion, the HP 17z’s performance is promising in light of the aforementioned result. In this storage review section, I will therefore give it a score of nine out of ten.
Graphics Card Performance
This HP laptop has an AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics card built in. Maximum frequency for the graphics card is 1200 MHz.
The AMD Radeon Vega 8 is an integrated graphics card, so it might not be able to handle the graphics-intensive tasks with ease. However, when you play contemporary games on medium settings, you will get some playable frame rates.
For instance, Far Cry 5 (2018) at 16 frames per second on medium settings should run smoothly on this laptop. Additionally, on a medium setting, it ought to be able to play Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018) at 12 frames per second.
Additionally, I will share with you the 3DMark benchmark score for this laptop. A test tool called 3D Mark evaluates how well a computer’s graphics card performs 3D rendering.
Additionally, it is important to note that a laptop’s performance improves with a higher score. As a result, the HP 17z achieved a benchmark score of 3871.
The laptop scored impressively higher than the 3429 median points.
The HP 470 G7 performed better than that, earning 2360 points on the same test. In the 3DMark test, the ASUS VivoBook 17 M712 scored 1878 points.
Finally, the GPU in the HP 17z can run modern games, but only on medium settings. Nevertheless, in the benchmark test, it performed superbly. As a result, I will give it a nine out of ten in the section on graphics performance.
Battery life
A three-cell, 41 Wh Li-ion battery powers the HP 17z. HP claims that this battery will provide up to 8 hours of battery life. You can complete the day’s work without frequently recharging the battery thanks to the 8 hours of battery life. We must, however, confirm this HP’s assertion.
We’ll look at some battery tests conducted by notebookcheck.com to help us achieve that. According to the test, the laptop could be used to browse the internet nonstop for 4 hours 52 minutes.
Unfortunately, the laptop used for the test’s battery life falls short of HP’s claim. However, let’s compare it to other laptops first before I make my final judgment about the battery.
As a result, our test model performed worse than the HP Pavilion Laptop – 15t. This is due to the HP Pavilion’s 9 hours 30 minute battery life in the same test.
In conclusion, the HP 17z underperformed in terms of battery life compared to one of its competitors and fell short of HP’s claim. I will give it a seven out of ten in this section dedicated to battery life.
